Kaweah Equipment Co reminds you to always stay safe when working on scissor lifts.

Before you start moving around on that lift today, take care to keep safe with these helpful tips:

  • Scissor lifts are safer than ladders when operated properly. Even so, serious injuries and fatalities have occurred due to scissor lift accidents.
    • The most common causes for accidents include tip-overs & electrocutions.
  • Always read the lift's provided user manual in order to learn the proper load limitations, weather tolerances, etc. for that exact model.
  • Before operation, always inspect the work site to ensure proper conditions both on the ground and in the air.
    • Any slight imbalance or instability experienced is amplified when the machine is raised.
  • Proper precautions should be taken when falling object hazards are present, whether that be a hazard to the lift operator, or to pedestrians below.
    • Barricade an area around the lift if necessary.
  • Operating in inclement weather is seriously dangerous. Don't operate the lift outdoors if there is sustained wind in the forecast, or if the lift is covered in ice or snow.
  • Safety inspections should be performed on lifts regularly. If defects are found, the lift should not be used until such defects are repaired.
  • Scissor lifts can be powered by batteries, diesel, or other means—usual safety procedures should be followed regarding which power source the lift is utilizing, i.e. safe battery charging and/or carbon monoxide awareness.

Take your team safety to the next level.

If you're interested in further training your equipment operators on safe practices & procedures, Kaweah Equipment offers an OSHA-approved Certified Safety Training course on this topic, which covers everything we mentioned today and more.

We will happily send one of our Certified Safety Trainers straight to your location, who will guide students through a graded classroom module as well as a real-life driving and/or operation test. Kaweah Equipment Co reminds you to always stay safe when working on ladders.

Before you start climbing that ladder today, take care to keep safe with these helpful tips:

  • 300 deaths occur each year from ladder accidents. Most commonly, falls due to haste, poor footware, or lack of attention.
  • It's important to select the right ladder for the job.
    • If the job environment is near electrical equipment, don't select an aluminum or steel ladder
    • The ladder should be tall enough to reach the desired work area without having to use the cap or top-most step.
    • Consider the weight of both the worker and their tools in order to select a ladder with a high enough capacity rating.
  • Before working, both the job site and the ladder itself should be inspected for hazards or damage.
    • If possible, eliminate any worksite hazards.
    • Do not use a ladder that has been damaged. Help prevent damage by storing & transporting the ladder properly.
  • The worker should not try to carry their own tools up to the top of a ladder; they should be handed up by others.

Take your team safety to the next level.

Forward Forward

Kaweah Equipment Co reminds you to always stay safe when working with your lift truck.

Before getting that forklift started up today, take care to keep safe with these helpful tips:

  • Nearly 100 forklift-related fatalities & 36,000 serious injuries occur every year.
    • 50% of these accidents involved a vehicle tipping over.
    • 20% of these accidents involved pedestrians being struck or crushed.
  • Important tips for preventing tip-overs:
    • Operators should have a constant awareness of the machine's load capacity, center of gravity, stability triangle, etc. These capacities vary based on the truck's current attachment!
    • Work conditions need to be free of slippery areas & obstructing debris.
  • Important tips for preventing pedestrian traffic accidents:
    • Right-of-way should always be given to pedestrians by forklift drivers.
    • Forklift and pedestrian traffic should be split by marked walkways or, if possible, guardrails.
    • If necessary, drivers should have another employee act as a spotter for their path of travel.
  • Other important tips for truck operation:
    • Inspect forklift machinery daily. Don't use a unit if any crack, leak, etc. is discovered!
    • If possible, refrain from using a forklift that runs on a combustion engine within a warehouse, plant or onboard ship that does not have adequate ventilation.
    • Always practice safe and patient procedures for mounting and starting a forklift, as well as parking and dismounting when finished.
  • Fun fact: Forklifts can ride in the elevator!
Just be sure the truck's total loaded weight is within the elevator's rated capacity. Also be sure to neutralize all forklift controls while the elevator is operating.

Take your team safety to the next level.

Does my forklift really need a 1000 hour service?

pre-season blog thumb.jpg

One thing we hear from time-to-time, "do I really need a 1,000 hour service on my forklift?" While that is an understandable question. The equipment may not appear to have anything wrong with it and taking the unit offline might seem counterproductive and costly.

There are many reasons the manufacturer's will recommend preventive maintenance, one of the most important is OSHA's requirements. Some other points are to ensure the lift is operating in safe conditions and to increase the up-time of your lift. Preventive maintenance can also extend the life of your forklift

OSHA Maintenance Requirement

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) requires a preventative maintenance program that ensures equipment is safe for employees. The OSHA standard states that all material handling equipment should be regularly inspected and maintained.

What's Included

Pre-Season Service

  • Perform 200 point inspection

  • Complete brake inspection

  • Clean and inspect for debris

  • Ignition & electrical inspection

  • Battery cleaning & inspection

  • All fluids changed

  • Attachment inspection

  • Cooling system inspection

  • Fuel Safety Inspection

  • Compression Test

  • Written condition report for OSHA

What you give to your lift is what you get out of it. Managers who keep the manufacturer's recommended service guidelines will have lifts that perform well for years and will keep the trade-in value high as well. Neglecting and cutting corners with maintenance leads to breakdowns and costly repairs.

We service all makes and models. Schedule your service today!

Keep Your Workplace Safe with Linde Blue Spot™

workplace-safety-thumb.jpg

Blue light for greater safety

Safety first! Whether employees are driving a forklift truck or walking, they quickly lose sight of potential risks when working. They may either be inattentive or absorbed in their work. Loud noises are distracting and can drown out important warning signals. This can all cause dangerous accidents on business premises. The innovative Linde BlueSpot™ driving path warning system minimizes risk without making a sound.

The LED light of the Linde BlueSpot™, attached to the driver’s protective roof frame, project a blue warning spot onto the ground. This warns pedestrians and other forklift drivers of approaching trucks. This visual solution from Linde Material Handling intuitively draws attention to moving forklift trucks. It therefore significantly increases safety, both in aisles and at crossings where visibility is poor.

ic_truck-moving-manufacturing-4208_482_16x9w960-blue.jpg

Unobtrusive but can’t be ignored

The Linde BlueSpot™ consists of two bright, anti-glare LED lights that project a blue spot onto the ground. They can be set to either shine constantly or flash. The light spot is positioned several meters ahead of the forklift truck, whether it’s traveling forward or backward. It lasts an impressively long time: The Linde BlueSpot™ lasts for more than 20,000 hours, as the LED technology enables high light intensity with low levels of energy.

Benefits at a glance

  • Driving path warning system: Increasing safety in aisles and at crossings with poor visibility
  • Early warning: A spot on the ground well ahead of the truck leaves plenty of time to move out of the way
  • Safety in all directions: Can be used when driving both forward and backward
  • LED technology: Anti-glare, high-intensity light using low levels of energy
  • Long service life: Very low operating temperature
  • Durability: Resistant to shaking, vibrations, and high-pressure cleaning
  • Diversity: LED light with a red or blue light spot or a blue arrow
  • Well-received by drivers and pedestrians: No need for disruptive acoustic warning signals

Is It Time to Replace Your Forklift Forks?

Is it Time to Replace Your Forks.jpg

Did you know, 29% of independently-inspected forks fail safety standards? Your forklift forks might appear indestructible, however after regular use they will start to become worn out and unsafe.

A simple visual inspection is not enough to determine if a fork is safe to use. the ANSI/ITSDF B-561 standards requre that forks must be inspected at least once per calendar year. OSHA also requires all powered industrial trucks, including forks, be examined daily or after each shift if the forklifts are utilized 24/7.

Unfortunately it can be easy to skip inspections which can lead to a snapped fork, dropped load and could lead to injuries or even death. How can you prevent such costly and unfortunate situations? Read on for more information.

Regular use causes forks to bend, crack, or wear down over time. Forks can also be damaged by:

  • Improper adjustments to the chain

  • Accidents (running into walls, columns, etc).

  • Overloading forks beyond their rated capacity.

Want to see if your truck/forks are working beyond their capacity, try this online calculator which can also account for attachments.

How to Inspect Forklift Forks

  • Check the angle of the shank and blade - If the shank and blade angle exceed 93 degrees, the fork must be replaced. Do not allow machine shops to bend forks back into place!

  • Ensure blade and shank are straight - If the shank or the blade are bent, the fork can no longer be used.

  • Inspect for surface cracks - Check the entire surface of each fork for cracks.
Pro Tip: the heel area and welds are most likely place for cracks to develop.

  • Check height of fork tip - The tips of your two forklift blades should be at roughly the same height. If the difference between the height of each tips exceeds three percent of the length of the blade, the forks need to be replaced. For example, if your for forklift blade is 48-inches long, the difference in height between the two forklift blade cannot exceed 1.44 inches.

  • Check the positioning lock - Ensure the positioning lock and other fork retention devices are working properly.

  • Measure thickness with calipers - The metal on a fork wears down slowly, but eventually the forks can no longer handle their original load capacity. Just 10% wear reduces load capacity by 20%, at which point the forks must be replaced. Using forklift calipers, measure the thickness of your fork blade, heel and hook using the shaft as a starting place.

  • Inspect fork hooks - Using calipers, check for wear and also straightness of fork hooks. If the lip of the hook touches the back of the caliper, the forks must be removed from service.

We hope this article contained helpful information. If you have any questions or would like us to inspect your forks for you please contact our service department. We also offer forklift safety training which is required by OSHA for forklift operators.
